A little about me and my family...

My photo
My love of people, photography and the world began as a child. My family moved a lot and taking pictures was my way of remembering friends, capturing special places or moments and holding them close. Becoming a wife and a mother has always been a dream of mine and I count my blessings daily. I started this blog shortly after our daughter, Yaya joined our family through the blessing of adoption. Its purpose was to share pictures and stories about our life with family and friends. Later, it shared our adoption journey to our second daughter, Baby Bird as well. Now that our family is complete I like to think of it as our family’s journal or life book. I'm passionate about life, my family and preserving our history one snapshot at a time. The thing that amazes me most is the abundance of beauty God blesses us with every day and in the simplest ways if only we take the time to slow down and appreciate them.

Life's A Box of Chocolates

Sigh...as Forrest Gump once said, "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." Yesterday we were coasting through our weekend routine when something unexpected fell in our lap or to be more precise our mailbox. At first, I thought it was a letter from Yaya's birth mom. I thought it was strange because the envelope's return address used her maiden name not the married one she normally goes by. Once I opened the letter I realized I was completely wrong. It wasn't from her birth mother at all. I had just opened our first letter from Yaya's biological grandparents. My heart began racing and my mind whirled with a million questions. I'll be honest, I cried. Bawled would be a better description. Not because I felt threatened by it or was afraid for Yaya. That wasn't it at all. I was just in complete and utter shock. You should know, we've often wondered about how they felt and have discussed what we would do or say if they ever contacted us. Thinking about our own parents missing out on one of their grand children's lives was all it took to convince us we would welcome any contact from them. That said, no amount of discussing or planning could have prepared us for that unexpected letter. I immediately called my girlfriend who has also adopted 2 girls and shared the letter with her. She stopped everything, prayed for me on the phone and she helped me focus on what they were saying and asking in the letter. Their letter was short and began with them introducing themselves and requesting to be part of Yaya's life through correspondence. They requested permission to send a gift on her birthday and at Christmas as well as any necessary family or medical history. In addition, they briefly explained their part in her adoption plan and how they felt about the job we're doing as parents. It was a very kind and respectful letter. Once I was able to get passed the initial shock and organize my thoughts and feelings I came to a new realization. HOW BLESSED IS MY CHILD TO HAVE SO MANY PEOPLE LOVE HER AND WANT TO BE PART OF HER LIFE?! Suddenly, my heart wasn't racing and my mind wasn't whirling. I found peace and began writing a response to them. We thanked them for helping Yaya's mother with the difficult decision of adoption. We thanked them for their generosity in offering to send gifts and provide any family or medical history they would like to share. We shared information about Yaya and what her adoption means to us, included some recent photos and told them we look forward to hearing from them in the future. You may wonder why I'm sharing this intimate part of our life. I guess it's because I want to be completely honest about all that adopting entails. Including all the unexpected surprises that sweet baby may bring your way.

I know a letter like that would seem scary from the outside or someone who has never considered what open or semi-open adoption is like. From those who have read about it or know about it, that sounds like something wonderful!

It's got to be jarring in life to have those unexpected appearances. You handle it with such grace.

You are a better person than I am! Getting a letter like this would frighten me to my very core. I hope I learn from you, and stop being so insecure. I'll be thinking of you!

Wow Frizzy...all I could think after reading this (and after getting over the shock myself!), was that you and Bird are very, very thoughtful, kind, loving, generous, respectful (insert a whole bunch of other wonderful adjectives here!) adoptive parents! Thank you for sharing ALL as I'm certain that many readers will appreciate hearing your words/thoughts on this.

Oh my gosh, I want to give you a BIG HUG! I was so frightened for you for a but there whilst reading it. Good on you collecting your thoughts and handling it as well as you did. I have never met Yaya IRL, but I am just as concerned for her nonetheless. Thanks for sharing! We all here for all special.

What a face of Christ you just shared with these people! Most people would probably want to hide & not allow any contact - but you see it as an opportunity for more people to love on yaya!!! That right there shows your heart... & that says A LOT!!!!

Will say a prayer over the whole situation that nothing but love & healthy relationships come out of this.

You're so much more generous than I am. My first reaction would have been to hide!

Oh girl what a bombshell, of course it gave you pause to wonder about the unknown of this situation...I am praying for you as you continue to make your way though this with good discernment, wisdom and grace.

HUGS and more hugs and a little chocolate might not hurt either :)

Don't know how I nearly missed this one.
I sat here with tears in my eyes and chills on my arms as I read this.
All of you are totally blessed. It is so amazing to see how God has worked through this whole process. I can only pray your next adoption is as successful.
Love you my friend.
